History & Traditional Uses
The use of Lavender essential oil has been traced back to 2500 years ago in the ancient civilisation of Egypt and in the Roman Empire. Lavender essential oil was used in perfume, to bathe, and to clean the air. The word ‘Lavender’ originates from the Latin verb ‘Lavare’ which means ‘to wash.’ A deeply versatile oil, the benefits of Lavender essential oils have been renowned around the world for decades.
Lavender preparations are traditionally employed to treat symptoms of certain nerve-related disorders like minor sleeplessness. In European systems of traditional herbal medicine, the main use for lavender flower teas, baths, and pillows is as a mild sedative.
Agriculture, Harvesting & Distilling
Hybrid lavender (lavandin x intermedia) has longer and more slender flowers, with upright flower spikes that branch out from the centre. These are late bloomers, emerging from mid to late summer, and have paler colours than ‘true lavender’ plants. Lavender, like many other flowering plants, needs well drained soil to thrive.
Harvesting is carried out by a combination of mechanical and hand methods. The leafy flowering tops are collected this way and placed into the small bin to be connected to the still. The heat for the still is supplied via a gas burner which heats the water for the steam which passes through the material, taking the oil with it. As it cools the water (hydrosol) is tapped off and the oil is collected. The waste material after distillation is allowed to cool, and then distributed along the side of the lavender rows as additional fertiliser and compost.
